Do you remember Mike Meyer’s “Coffee Talk with Linda Richman”? In this popular SNL skit Linda Richman would say, “I’m all verklempt…talk amongst yourselves”. THAT is the best way to look at social media. Your potential customers do not want to be talked at, they want to be engaged and they want to have a conversation. For example, if you are a landscaping company and you want to show people your latest outdoor kitchen project, don’t just take a picture and post it to your Facebook page. Engage them. Post the picture and ask a question like, “What is the best way to cook corn-on-the-cob on the grill”? or “What would be the first meal you’d cook on this grill?” People will comment with their answer and their friends will chime in…the comments will fly in and surround your page with people that indirectly will see what you can do.
Here is another example:
If your company is opening up a new location on the West side of town, don’t just tell people you have a new location. Post a picture of your new location with a map and ask people, “What is your favorite restaurant on the West side?” or “Who lives on the WEST side, why is it the BEST side?”
Don’t forget about the SOCIAL in social media. Posting a picture and company news is no better than buying an ad in the local paper. Just because you are putting it on a social media site, doesn’t make it social. Avenues like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn are becoming so popular because, and only because, it allows others to communicate about what interests them.
So what do you think about this blog post? Am I right or wrong? How could it be better? Talk amongst yourselves.
